2x6 vs 5 4x6 decking

2x6 or 5/4 for deck boards? | Green Tractor Talk

My front deck (480 sq) has 2x6 decking and the rear deck (300 sq) has 5/4 decking, both 16" on center. You will get most of any bounce on a deck from the span/size of the joists, not the decking, so one up your joists for a sturdy deck. Quality wise, I prefer the 5/4 decking. It doesn't seem to check as easily as the 2x.

5/4 is cheaper, and you can get a select/Seven Trust #1 grade whereas I only see #2 grade available for 2 x 6 PT which some boards look good, but a lot are also on the lower level of #2 grade with the knots in them. 2x6 I'd probably do 16" OC even on a 45* angle vs 5/4 x 5 12" OC. 5/4 boards twist out of shape in a hurry to when drying.

Spacing between deck boards provide a few critical functions. The primary function is to drain water from the deck.

I just finished mine and went with treated 2x6's. I like how solid it is. My brother in law just did a huge deck and went with 5/4 boards, easier to get clear boards for the money with 5/4. I wish I'd taken the time to visit a couple lumber yards to get better lumber for the money but it worked out fine.

Wood -- the joists can be 24" O.C. for 2X6, or 16" O.C. for 5/4, assuming that you are running the deck boards perpendicular to the joists. If you run the deck boards diagonally, then 16" for 2X6 and 12" for 5/4. Composite, vinyl, or plastic decking -- follow what the mfgr. says to do.

I'm wondering if there are any specific pros or cons for using the same 2x6x10' boards, vs. 1x6 deck boards? Of course I realize that the 1x6 boards wont support the same amount of weight as the original boards, but I think the 2x6's might have been a bit overkill anyway.

Have used both 2x6 and the 5/4 boards. The bending moment or flex is greater in the 5/4 but the 2x6 will pinch your feet walking on it barefoot.
